How to Clean Your Shower Curtain

Just like your shower, your curtain and liner can become dirty and unsanitary over time. Not only do dust and soap scum build up, but the recurring heat and moisture can lead to the growth of mold and mildew. Ready to freshen up your bathroom? Most shower curtains can be cleaned right in your washing machine, but be sure to check the label for any special washing instructions first! Keep reading this blog post to learn how to properly clean shower curtains (fabric or plastic) and curtain liners.

How to Clean a Shower Curtain in a Washing Machine 1. If your shower curtain and/or liner is labeled machine washable, start off by removing them from the curtain hooks. 2. Place them in your washing machine along with two clean, white towels. The towels will help scrub the curtain and liner while also preventing them from wrinkling and sticking together. 3. Add the normal amount of detergent you would for a load of laundry along with a half a cup of baking soda. 4. Select the warm, normal cycle and start your machine. 5. When the wash cycle is finished, reattach the curtain and liner to the curtain hooks in your shower and allow them to hang dry. If your shower curtain is made of heavy natural fibers, you may need to tumble dry and iron afterwards. (Check the care label.) Aside from this exception, your curtain and liner should drip dry on its own just fine. If the stains on your shower curtain or liner are being extra stubborn you can add vinegar to the rinse cycle. Follow the same steps as above, but when your washing machine switches to the rinse cycle, open your machine and pour in a half a cup of distilled white vinegar. Allow the cycle to finish and hang dry as previously described. How to Clean a Shower Curtain by Hand 1. Sprinkle a light layer of baking soda on a damp microfiber cloth. 2. Scrub the entire shower curtain or liner. 3. Use a new cloth to rinse your curtain or liner with warm water. Scrub your curtain or liner until all traces of baking soda are gone. 4. If any stains remain, repeat the process again until the stains disappear. 5. Reattach to curtain hooks and hang dry. How to Clean Shower Curtain Hooks 1. Remove the hooks from the shower curtain rod. 2. Fill your bathroom sink or a small basin with warm water and one cup of distilled white vinegar. 3. Allow to soak for 15-20 mins. Use an old toothbrush to remove any stubborn dust or soap residue. 4. Once clean, drain and rinse with warm water. 5. Wipe thoroughly with a dry towel before placing the hooks back on the shower curtain rod. Cleaning your shower curtain and liner creates a healthier environment and can help give your bathroom a brighter, fresher appearance. We recommend cleaning them once every three months, or more often if your bathroom has poor air circulation and you start to see mold and mildew growth.
