Choosing the Right Curtain Rod for your Window Coverings

Choosing the right curtain rods and hardware can make a big impact on the overall aesthetics and functionality of your window treatments. Use this helpful guide to make informed decisions to guarantee your curtains will match your style and meet your needs!

Consider Your Curtain Style

There is an adage in the window coverings industry that “Curtains cover your windows, but they need to fit the rod”. As you get started on choosing rods and hardware, consider the style of curtain you intend to use which will help determine the kind of rod and hardware that will work best.

Grommet Curtains: This style of curtain requires a smooth, round rod that can easily slide through the grommets. It’s important to remember that on wide windows like a slider or French doors, if the rod requires a center support that the grommet top curtain will not be able to traverse past where the center support is placed. Like our Versailles Lexington Decorative Ball Rod Set, which is featured above.
Rod Pocket Curtains: A standard curtain rod works best for this style of curtain since the fabric will be “shirred” or “gathered” onto to the curtain rod providing fullness, so the curtain does not look like a flat sheet of cloth hanging on the window.
Tab Top Curtains: Generally smooth, round, decorative rods work best to allow the tab loops to hold the curtain on the rod. Smooth rods also allow the curtain to be opened and closed easily.
Pinch Pleated Curtains: This style of curtain is generally heavier and is typically lined, providing more insulation and protection from sun. These products utilize pin hooks that can be adjusted on the back of the pleats allowing the customer to hang the product onto either a plain traverse rod or decorative rod depending on the style preference.

Material and Finish

A curtain rods material and finish can affect both durability and appearance. The most common varieties are:

Wooden Rods: These rods can add a rustic touch to any room and are typically finished with a stain to often match flooring or window trim or can be painted to match your décor. Wood rods generally need to be cut to size to fit the window.
Metal Rods: The most durable type of rod and come in a variety of styles and finishes such as bronze, nickel, or chrome and usually come in a variety of widths to cover the smallest to even the largest of openings.
Plastic Rods: These rods can be less durable, but they are affordable and come in a variety of colors and styles.
Magnetic Rods: These rods are typically designed for metal entrance doors and require no tools or brackets to hold them in place. Ideally for lightweight curtains.

Rod Diameter and Length

Picking the right diameter and length is essential for both appearance and functionality:

Diameter: The average range is between ½ inch to 1-1/2” inches. A heavier curtain will require a thicker rod to support it.
Length: Measure the length of your window in advance to determine where you desire to hang your curtain rod. Hanging curtains to at the perfect height is as much about design as it’s personal taste. Many customers like to “puddle” panels on the sides of the window if the curtains are going to remain stationary. Customers that are seeking functionality, energy efficiency, and privacy may want the curtains to brush lightly along the edge of the floor, especially if the curtains are to be opened and closed daily.

Types of Curtain Rods

Different curtain rods can suit different decorating needs and preferences:

Single Standard Rods: Best for any curtain requiring a standard rod like valances or sheer under treatments.
Double Rods
: Best for a layered look, such as Valance or Swag with a pair of sheer or lace curtains underneath them.
Tension Rods: Renter friendly! These rods require no hardware to install and are great for apartment rentals, Air B-n-Bs, or any temporary spaces.
Traverse Rods:  Come with a cord or wand for easy opening. These are best suited for pleated drapes. These are best suited for pinch pleated drapes.
Wrap Around Rods: These rods, often referred to as “French Rods” are perfect for Grommets to allow for better insulation, privacy, and aesthetics. The “return” on the rod allows the Tab or Grommet to wrap back towards the wall providing a clean, finished look when used.

Hardware and Accessories

Picking complementary hardware and accessories can really make your look pop! Many rods are sold as a set and include brackets and finials. Consider the following additions:

Brackets: Choose the right material to be sure they’re strong enough to support the weight of your curtains.
Finials: Decorative end caps to your curtain rods that come in a variety of colors, styles and finishes.
Tiebacks and holdbacks: Can complete the look with both style and functionality. Useful for holding open curtains during the day.

Installation Tips

Installing your curtains right will not only ensure they hang beautifully but also function efficiently.

Height: A good rule of thumb is to mount your curtain rods 3-6” inches above your window frame, which will create the illusion of taller windows and more spacious rooms. Ultimately the mounting widths and heights is truly a personal preference.
Width: Mount your rods extended beyond the window frame to allow the curtains to hang beside your window when open. This is frequently referred to as “stack-back”.  Extending the rod past the window will allow more natural light into the room.

By considering these factors, you'll be well-equipped to choose the perfect curtain rods and hardware for your home, enhancing both style and practicality.
